The map shows the United States with five proposed railroad routes to the Pacific. Wheat writes: "On this interesting map...potential railroad routes are shown from St. Paul to the site of Seattle, with a branch down the Columbia to Astoria; from Council Bluffs and St. Louis up the Platte, past Ft. Laramie...to Astoria; from the site of Kansas City up the 'Kanzas,' past Bent's Fort on the Arkansas...to San Francisco; from Neosho and Little Rock up the Canadia, past Santa Fe...to San Francisco; and from Little Rock and New Orleans to El Paso...to San Diego, with a branch in California to Tejon Pass."
