1640 Bertius - Carte de L'Amerique...
Scarce 1640 map of the western hemisphere with polar insets
Carte de L'Amerique. . .
Petrus Bertius, Michel van Lochom
37.8 x 49.8 cm (14.9 x 19.6 in)
The map is based on the Jodocus Hondius map of 1618.
The entire west coast of North America, including nomenclature, is erased and replaced by a dotted coastline with the legend pays non encore descoverts (land not yet discovered). This reflects possibly an attempt to balance the two schools of thought at the time as to weather California was an island or not.
In this state the name of Bertius removed and dated 1640. Furthermore, notes Burden, many placehnames have been added for this state, including: euf Amsterdam, Pleymouth, Accadie, S. Augustino and northeast, and N. Albion and Quivera in the west.
Petrus Bertius of Flanders had been resident in Paris for some years as Cosmographer to King Louis XIII of France.
Several folds as issued, very good condition.
Burden, 209, state 2.
